There are Two Ways to Connect Brother hl-2170w Printer to WiFi Connection:

1. Using a Network Cable (or via Wireless Setup Wizard)

Before you can configure the wireless settings for your printer, you should be clear with your network security settings of the wireless router or AP. Make a record of these settings for further use.

  • Network Name (SSID: Service Set ID, ESSID: Extended Service Set ID)
  • Network Key (Password, Security Key or Encryption Key, etc.)

You will find this detail in the documentation or at the back side of the router device.

Step 1 : Configure the settings. The screens may vary depending upon your OS.

Step 2 : Connect one end of your AC power cord to your Brother machine and another to the AC power source.

Step 3 : Then switch ON your Brother machine.

Step 4 : Turn ON on your computer system as Administrator.

Step 5 : Insert the provided CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

Note: If you don't have to CD-ROM, download the Wireless Setup Wizard for Windows or Macintosh.

Step 6 : The opening screen will give options to select model and language (for windows).

Step 7 : Double-click on the HLxxxx (xxxx= your model name) icon on your desktop and then double-click the Start Here or Start Here OSX icon. Choose the model and language if required (for windows).

Step 8 : Click Install Printer Driver from the CD-ROM main menu.

Step 9 : Then, click on Wireless Network users.

Step 10 : Select Wireless Setup and Driver Install (Recommended) option as Wireless Installation Type and click Next button.

Step 11 : Choose the settings configuration method as:

Step 12 : Step by Step install (Recommended) >> Next >> With cable (Recommended), Or, Automatic (Recommended) >> Next

Step 13 : Next, connect the printer to your access point via a network cable and click on Next.

Step 14 : Choose the printer you wish to configure from the device setup wizard and click on Next.

Note: If you don't find the access point listed, check whether the printer is powered on or not. Click the Refresh button.

Step 15 : The wizard searches for available wireless networks for your printer.

Step 16 : Select AP you wish to set up and configure with the printer. Then, click on Next.

Step 17 : A screen may appear asking Network Name (SSID, ESSID) of the unsecured WLAN access point/router.

Step 18 : Further, you can configure the Authentication and Encryption settings for your Brother printer. Select desired Authentication Method and Encryption Mode from the pull-down setting.

Step 19 : Finally, enter the Network key and Confirm Network Key, and click Next.

Step 20 : Check the settings before you click on the Next button.

Step 21 : Here, if you want to change the IP address manually, commit the changes.

Step 22 : Click the Cancel button to disable the settings.

Step 23 : Now, you can disconnect the network cable between your AP and printer and click on Next.

Step 24 : Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer driver for wifi connection. The driver installation automatically starts.

Step 25 : If the drivers are already installed, click Cancel to finish the process.

2. Using Automatic Wireless mode (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)

If your router or AP supports WPS, you can easily connect your Brother printer to your wireless networks. Perform the given steps to configure the wireless settings:

Step 1 : Keep the placement of Brother machine within the range of your WPS compatible access point/router.

Step 2 : Try to make sure that the power cable is plugged into the source.

Step 3 : Switch ON the machine and wait until the Brother machine comes into the Ready state.

Step 4 : Press and hold the WPS or AOSS™ button on your WLAN access point/router for some time.

Step 5 : Push the wireless setup button given at the back of the machine for a maximum of 2 seconds.

Step 6 : The machine automatically searches for WLAN access point/router that supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup mode. During the 2-min period, the Toner LED starts to blink.

Step 7 : The printer is connecting to WLAN access point/router. During that time, the Toner and Drum LEDs will start blinking.

Step 8 : Wait for the time until the Ready LED of your machine indicates Connected.

Note: This Ready LED turns ON for 5 minutes which is a success indication that the machine has successfully connected to your WLAN access point/router.

If you don't see the Ready LED blinking, it means that the printer has failed to connect to your WLAN access point/router. Check the manual for WLAN error codes if the connection setup has failed. So, finally, the Brother hl-2170w wireless setup is now complete.
