Why Brother Printer Model HL 3170 CDW Stops Responding to Print Commands from Applications?

I have a brother model HL 3170 CDW. Every once in a while it stops responding to print commands from applications like word. When I look at the devices and printers page is shown as off line. When I shut it off and turn it back on it works correctly. This only happens occasionally but the occasions seem to occur after I receive a Microsoft Windows update. Is the possibility? And, is there a way to solve the problem or do I have to just put up with it?
