How to Repair ADF Feeder Parts for HP Officejet Pro?

The Automatic Document Feeder on your HP Officejet Pro saves time when scanning or copying multi-page documents. But when it starts jamming, skipping pages, or pulling multiple sheets at once, the ADF becomes more frustrating than helpful. Most ADF problems come down to dirty or worn rollers, a bad separator pad, or debris stuck inside the feeder mechanism.

Clean the ADF Rollers

Dirty rollers are the most common reason the ADF stops feeding properly. Open the ADF cover on the top of the printer. You will see small rubber rollers that pull the paper through the feeder. Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and gently wipe each roller. Rotate them by hand to clean the entire surface. If the rollers have a shiny or slick appearance instead of a slightly sticky rubber feel, they are worn and need to be replaced. Clean the rollers at least once a month if you use the ADF frequently.

Replace the ADF Separator Pad

The separator pad is a small rubber piece that sits opposite the pickup roller. Its job is to make sure only one sheet feeds through at a time. When this pad wears out, the ADF pulls multiple pages together or does not grab the paper at all. Open the ADF cover and locate the separator pad. It is usually held in place by a small clip or one screw. Remove the old pad, note how it was positioned, and snap the new one into place. Clear Paper Jams Inside the ADF

If the ADF jams frequently, paper fragments or debris may be stuck inside the mechanism. Open the ADF cover and look for any torn paper, staples, paper clips, or sticky notes that may have been accidentally fed through. Use tweezers to carefully remove any debris. Also check the ADF output tray area where paper exits after scanning. Small torn pieces can get lodged in the exit path and block future sheets from passing through.

Fix a Loose or Broken ADF Hinge

The ADF lid connects to the printer body through hinges that can crack or come loose over time especially if the lid is frequently opened and closed with force. If the ADF lid does not sit flat or wobbles when closed, inspect the hinges on both sides. If a hinge is cracked, you can order a replacement hinge assembly for your specific HP Officejet Pro model. Remove the screws holding the broken hinge, swap in the new one, and tighten the screws. A loose lid causes uneven pressure on the paper stack which leads to feeding problems.

Replace the ADF Pickup Roller

The pickup roller is the main roller that grabs the first sheet from the paper stack and feeds it into the scanner. Over time the rubber surface wears smooth and loses its grip. To replace it, open the ADF cover and locate the pickup roller at the top of the feeder. Most HP Officejet Pro models allow you to pop the roller out by pressing a release tab on one side. Slide the old roller off the shaft, slide the new one on, and snap it into place. Run a test scan with a multi-page document to confirm the new roller feeds pages smoothly.

Run the ADF Maintenance Routine

HP Officejet Pro printers have a built-in maintenance routine for the ADF. Open the HP Smart app or the printer embedded web server by typing the printer IP address in a browser. Go to Tools or Maintenance and look for Clean Document Feeder or ADF Maintenance. This runs a cleaning cycle that uses a blank sheet to pick up dust and debris from the rollers and paper path. Run this routine after any repair to verify the ADF is working correctly.
